Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand (Medical Deans) congratulates the 13 Council members appointed to the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) today.

The Hon Sussan Ley, Minister for Health acknowledged the breadth of talent and skills on the new Council including members of Medical Deans, the Chair and Dean of the University of Sydney Medical School, Professor Bruce Robinson AM and the Executive Dean of Flinders University Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Professor Michael Kidd AM.

This distinguished Council will also be ably supported by their CEO, Professor Anne Kelso who recently presented her vision for the organisation at a recent meeting of all Deans in Canberra.

‘The leadership provided by the NHMRC is fundamental to achieving excellence in medical research in Australia, said the President of Medical Deans, Professor Nicholas Glasgow.

‘Even more so now as the Government establishes the strategic directions and operations of the new Medical Research Futures Fund (MRFF)’.

Professor Glasgow said that it is pivotal that the NHMRC is central to the planning of this exciting initiative.

Australian universities administer 79% of all NMHRC funding for medical research and provide the essential training platform for tomorrow’s doctor scientists.

Professor Glasgow said building essential research collaborations between universities, health service providers and the NHMRC will improve our health system overall.

Medical Deans is made up of the Deans of Australia’s 18 university medical schools and the two New Zealand schools.

Medical Deans today announced the appointment of Carmel Tebbutt to the position of Chief Executive Officer of Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand.

Ms Tebbutt commences in the position on 19 October 2015

This appointment follows the election of a new leadership Executive team for Medical Deans, led by the President, Professor Nicholas Glasgow in June this year

 ‘This is an outstanding appointment for the organisation,’ said Professor Glasgow

 ‘Carmel brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and networks in the health and education sector. She is widely respected and is well known for her strong negotiating skills and working collaboratively with many stakeholders’, Professor Glasgow said.

Carmel Tebbutt comes to the position following eleven years executive experience as a Minister and senior member of the Cabinet in the NSW Parliament with portfolio responsibilities across a number of areas including education and training, health, community services and environment.

 Ms Tebbutt said she was excited about her new role. ‘There are many challenges confronting medical education and research. I am looking forward to using my skills to forward the objectives of the Medical Dean’s.’

 Ms Tebbutt said ‘One of my first tasks will be to meet with members and stakeholders to hear first-hand about the key issues for the sector.’

 Members also welcomed the announcement and are confident that Ms Tebbutt is just the right person to represent and manage the organisation at this time in its development.

Professor Judy Searle is retiring from the position after nearly two and half years at the helm.

Medical Deans today announced the appointment of the new Executive Committee under the leadership of the new President,            Professor Nicholas Glasgow from the Australian National University.

Joining the President are Professor Richard Murray as Vice President, Professor Michelle Leech as Treasurer, Professor Alison Jones as Secretary and Professor Ian Symonds, Professor Peter Crampton and Professor Brendan Crotty as members.

The Executive Committee was appointed by the members at the recent Annual General Meeting in Canberra and will serve for two years.

‘I am delighted to be working with such talented individuals on the Executive,’ said Professor Glasgow.

Members also welcomed in the incoming team and acknowledged there is much to do in this challenging environment, particularly in the areas of medical workforce mal distribution and medical research.

‘It is a privilege to work for Medical Deans in this capacity and I am confident the organisation will continue to develop and be a strong unified voice for medical education, training and research,’ said Professor Glasgow.

Professor Glasgow is looking forward to building on the objectives of the current strategic plan including the consolidation of key partnerships. One of his first duties as President will be to jointly sign the new Collaboration Agreement between Medical Deans and the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA) in August in Townsville.

Professor Glasgow and the members also thanked and acknowledged the strong leadership from the outgoing President,                      Professor Peter Smith.
