Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand (Medical Deans) applauds Minister Ley for the establishment of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) Review and its Taskforce announced on 22nd April, 2015 and the subsequent launch of the consultation process on 27th September 2015.

Minister Ley has outlined that the Government’s clinician-led review of all 5700 MBS items is part of a three-pronged approach to Medicare reform with an interim report due to Government by late 2015.

Medical Deans also congratulates the Government on the appointment of Professor Bruce Robinson, Dean of Sydney University Medical School to lead this review along with other talented clinicians, academics and consumers on this Taskforce.

‘It is essential that we have the expertise around the table to drive a robust evidence-based approach to this review, President Professor Nicholas Glasgow said.

‘The public should rightly expect that publicly funded medical services not only work but are also fully tested, safe and are cost effective.’

All Deans of medical schools in Australia strongly endorsed the review process at its recent Annual Conference in October in Hobart.

Professor Glasgow said Medical Deans looks forward to providing input into the consultation process and being part of the solution.

‘We all want a stronger, healthier and sustainable Medicare system and this review is critical to that end.’

Medical Deans is the peak national professional body representing entry-level medical education, training and research in Australia.
