Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand Inc (Medical Deans) is the peak body representing professional entry-level medical education, training and research in Australia and New Zealand. The organisation’s membership comprises the Deans of Australia’s current 18 medical schools and the two New Zealand schools and is managed on a day to day basis by its Chief Executive Officer.
Medical Deans has a growing portfolio of responsibilities which reflects the increasing size and complexity of medical education and training. Its responsibilities encompass leadership and innovation in education and training, medical research, strategic partnerships across the medical workforce continuum, collaboration amongst medical schools and significant contributions to medical workforce planning.
As well as having an extensive representative and advocacy role in the advancement of health and education, Medical Deans auspice a number of significant projects in relation to medical workforce through the Medical Schools Outcomes Database, Indigenous Health through the LIME Network, graduate competencies and benchmarking, clinical supervision and social accountability.
Medical Deans works in partnership with organisations across the medical workforce continuum such as the Confederation of Postgraduate Medical Education Councils and Committee of Presidents of Medical Colleges, with medical students through the Australian Medical Students’ Association, with Indigenous Health organisations such as the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association, the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and Te ORA, and with workforce organisations such as Health Workforce Australia. A significant number of current projects are funded by the Australian Government and Health Workforce Australia.
The organisation is supported by a team of operational and project staff primarily located in Sydney.
